Toronto emcee and beatsmith Rich Kidd has just released a new mixtape filled with unreleased instrumentals. Listen to him flip some Marvin Gaye samples on “Kiddstrumentals 2” after the jump.
“I use to listen to these podcasts from DJ Grouchy Greg where he would play all these classic soul tunes and give a back story to how the tracks came to be. One episode was about Marvin, Berry Gordy and Motown. The story of Marvin’s life was both beautiful and tragic and brought life to the music that I already heard but never analyzed. I learned this man was world famous but dead broke, depressed, addicted to coke and still created this masterpiece. It was conceptual, political, religious, conscious and soulful all at the same time. It became my favorite album. I put it in the ranks of the Ready To Die‘s, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt‘s and Hell Hath No Fury‘s of my collection but overall, it’s the greatest album ever created to me.
I crafted this tape in the summer of 2007, when I was living with my cousin in Jane and Finch. Feeling broke, somewhat depressed and being a pothead, I felt like I was in the same creative nirvana as Marvin at the time. I chopped every song on that album and wanted to do a album project with me or someone else rapping on it. Time passed by and now its 2013. Honestly, I subconsciously didn’t want to hear no rappers on it. I left it alone. Glad I did. Enjoy.”
ASAP Rocky mentioned in the past that he was planning on putting out a project of purely instrumentals he made and now he looks to be giving it to us fairly soon. He talks to MTV about the album which is called “Beauty & The Beast: Slowed Down Sessions Chapter 1” and says he plans to put it out for free by the end of the Summer. Interesting to see how his production skills turn out.
“I think people are gonna be intrigued by it because it’s actually good. I wouldn’t do nothing that I didn’t feel confident or comfortable about. I think people gonna like this sh–. It’s really druggy, ambient sh–. The name of it is Beauty and the Beast: Slowed Down Sessions, Chapter 1. And it’s because everything is like classical beautiful music and boom-bap Wu-Tang sh– mixed together. It’s slowed down and it’s real vibey, with no lyrics. I feel like it’s gonna get people through the summer. Before I got with my girlfriend I f—ed a hundred bitches to my soundtrack already and it ain’t even out yet. I’m not looking to put it out, I’m just gonna drop it for free online and I’ma have visuals to it. It’s gonna be like a real album, but it’s gonna be free.
Boi-1da was a part of the Red Bull Music Academy this year where he played a bunch of his hit records he has produced over the years. Near the end of the set he was feeling generous and decided to play three new instrumentals which he said we may hear on some upcoming albums. They all sound crazy, can’t wait to see who used them.
